From Hobby to Business: When Is It Time to Start Selling?

Writer: Dana ArnoldDana Arnold

Many people start creating purely for the joy of it or because they are looking for a hobby. A need for a hobby was one of the reasons I got started years ago. At some point, you might begin wondering: "Could I actually sell my handmade products?" or after showing what you created to others you find your products in demand amongst family and friends. Turning a hobby into a business is exciting, but how do you know when it is right to go that route? Here are a few signs that you may be ready to take the leap.

1. You Have a Creative Process and Product

If you've been making the same type of product for a while and and have polished your skills, this is a strong indicator that you're ready to sell. Being consistent with your quality and having designs that people swoon over is a good sign you need to start selling.

2. Friends & Family Want to Buy

A great sign that you could actually sell your products are the people around you asking "how much do you want for that?"! When I would bring my creations into the workplace (to really just get opinions) and coworkers immediatly started asking to buy them, that was my sign that I was ready to sell. Genuine interest from others means there is potential demand for what you make.

3. You Receive Positive Feedback

The feedback you get from those friends and family; especially the ones trying to buy your products before you even finish the piece, is a major clue to you that you need to think bigger about your creations. Legitimate positive feedback is a compliment to your skill and designs. Remember, if they are putting their money where their mouth is, it isn't just someone being polite, they really want to showcase your creation.

4. You Can Produce Enough Inventory

Selling means keeping up with demand. Other than polishing your skills and designs, you must also be efficient. If you can create multiple pieces within your work-life balance you are ready to sell. You need to make sure you do not create an environment where keeping up with your inventory can cause a burnout. When you start selling be prepared for a following. You have to be able to keep up with demand, so make sure the pieces you design fit your work-life balance.

5. You're Willing to Price Your Work for Profit

Many of us price our products too low. Don't sell yourself short. It is understandable that we live in a world that likes to get more for the buck, but understand the value of your pieces. One of the hardest shifts from hobbyist to business owner is pricing your work fairly. If you're ready to calculate costs, factor in time, and set prices that ensure profit, you’re thinking like a business owner.

6. You Enjoy the Idea of Selling

Making a product and posting it isn't all you have to focus on. You need to promote your brand. You have to be your loudest advertiser. You not only design the pieces but you also have to design your clever marketing strategies. If you're excited about sharing your work, interacting with buyers, and growing your brand, start taking the next steps.
